Staying safe while fundraising

Here at St Wilfrid’s we are incredibly grateful to you for your fundraising efforts. The Hospice could not help as many people as it does without local support.

We always want you to be safe and want to help you stay within the law when supporting St Wilfrid’s Hospice so here are a few tips on how to do that. Give us a call on 01243 755827 or email us on fundraising@stwh.co.uk  if you need any help or advice.

THE BASICS

  • When creating publicity for your event, please say you are fundraising ‘in aid of’ St Wilfrid’s Hospice, rather than saying you represent the charity
  • There are strict rules on raffles, tombolas and sweepstakes, but once you know them they are easy to follow. You can do a raffle on the day of an event, for instance, but not before unless you register it legally. Please contact us for guidance.
  • Make sure to get a licence before collecting money in a public place. Please do not collect door-to-door as it requires a very different licence.
  • Please send all funds you have raised to us as soon as possible
  • If any children are involved in your fundraising, we need to take extra care so ensure:
    • There is proper adult supervision at all times
    • Parents and guardians have given their permission for children to take part
    • There are appropriate formal background checks if adults are ever to be left unsupervised with children, even for a short time. It is best to avoid this if possible.

EVENTS

  • Remember it is your fundraising event and needs to be organised effectively and safely.
  • Of course most events go off without a hitch but please conduct a ‘risk assessment’ beforehand to ensure everyone’s safety. This means thinking through anything that might go wrong and taking measures to reduce any risks involved. We can advise or visit hse.gov.uk for help with this.
  • Check if you need any special licences, including public entertainment licences or a licence to sell alcohol. Allow time for these to be applied for.
  • Also see what insurance cover you need for your event.
  • Don’t forget to fully brief any participants beforehand about the event and include any relevant safety requirements.
  • The Institute of Fundraising website has lots of good advice on how to fundraise how2fundraise.org
