Chief Executive Alison Moorey said, “Our retail team have been hard at work these past few weeks preparing all our shops to greet our fantastic shopper supporters. We trust they will appreciate not only the fantastic goods we’ve been adding daily, but that our shops cleanliness and safety has been second to none on the high street. Every purchase helps a patient, with thousands of you helping to support someone at home with life limiting illness to receive the compassionate care and support they need”.

With every item having to be scrupulously processed and cleaned it is very important our supporters help us manage this process by only donating goods to our shops during specific hours when this service can be safely supported. These times are:

Retail Director Laura Addison also explains how important it was for people to be ‘thoughtful’ about what they donate, and only give good quality, re-saleable items to avoid stores being overwhelmed. “We are extremely grateful to donors who have used lockdown to clear out their wardrobes to generously donate to us to help support the care of St Wilfrid’s Hospice for patients and their loved ones in our community. Previously, if items have not been of a quality we would offer in our shops then we’ve been able to recycle them through a variety of outlets. Now these markets – known as rag markets – have collapsed, leaving us with paying the costs of disposing of unsaleable clothes and other items, so please choose your pre-loved items wisely.”
Volunteering
At St Wilfrid’s we understand that your time, skills and enthusiasm are precious, so we want you to get the most out of your experience with us. Our volunteers are a vital part of our organisation, quite simply, without them we couldn’t keep making a difference to the lives of those who need us most in our local community. Over a quarter of all our income comes from retail. A volunteer in our shop contributes to raising over £2,000,000 every year for St Wilfrid’s compassionate care in the community. We offer a wide and varied range of roles where no experience is needed but full training and support will be given in a Covid-secure environment.
