Robert’s Story – Why I enjoy being a volunteer gardener

Have you ever wondered how our Hospice gardens are always kept looking beautiful? We recently spoke to one of our Hospice volunteer gardeners, Robert, about what he gets up to at the Hospice, and why he enjoys volunteering for a local charity.

What is it like to be a volunteer gardener?

“As a gardener, we started here four years ago this Summer, with a blank canvas. The garden was originally put together following a professional plan and with a professional firm involved.”
“In the early stages of laying out the garden, a lot of people from the local community came in to help plant all the initial plants and shrubs on the blank canvas. Since then, we’ve developed the garden to what it is today”.

I get a lot of enjoyment and reward out of doing the gardening. It’s the camaraderie and it’s a place that’s full of laughter, it’s not all serious.
