Jon’s Story – Why I enjoy volunteering as a Ward Assistant

When visiting the Hospice Ward, you most likely spoke to some of our friendly Ward Assistants, who would have made you a cup of tea and sat and had a chat with you.

We recently spoke to one of our Hospice Ward Assistant volunteers, Jon, about what he gets up to at the Hospice, and why he enjoys volunteering for a local charity.

What is it like to volunteer on the Hospice Ward?

“I’ve been a Ward volunteer now for about seven years, after I retired from my career.”

“Meeting the patients, meeting the relatives, working with the amazing nurses, doctors and support staff here at the Hospice, and just the feeling of doing something and being very lucky and honoured to be able to do something very special, at a very special place.”

I shadowed one shift on the Ward and I thought that this is so, so special
