Jan and David’s Story
“Hello, my name is Jan, and I wanted to share my experience, because the past few weeks have been far happier than I could ever have imagined – and it’s all thanks to this remarkable place – St Wilfrid’s Hospice.”
“My husband, David, and I have been married for 50 years. We have lived and laughed together, raised our two wonderful children, and worked until retirement. Two years ago, David was diagnosed with cancer. After chemotherapy and radiotherapy, he was given the all clear. Then last year the cancer returned more aggressively and it’s terminal.
David was at rock bottom before we came to St Wilfrid’s. But from the moment they became involved with David’s care, everything changed for the better.
Our home has been a sanctuary throughout David’s treatment. So it was amazing to have daily visits from the St Wilfrid’s community care team. Their support has been so precious to us, particularly when they realised how distressed David was because he hadn’t been able to have a shower for several weeks. They quickly arranged for David to visit the Hospice, where he could have a shower safely.
Two healthcare assistants treated him with such dignity and kindness that he described them as angels. Feeling warm water on his skin and being properly clean again moved him to tears, and reminded us both how much these small comforts matter.
David is now staying at the Hospice, while they get his pain and symptoms under control. With St Wilfrid’s support, David has regained his appetite and some strength. Talking to his counsellor, Joe, has made him feel less anxious. And I’ve always been able to call for advice or reassurance whenever I’ve felt worried or unsure.
The care David receives at St Wilfrid’s is truly exceptional.
And he loves the food and having visitors, including his beloved dog Scooby. He loves watching the birds and squirrels in the Hospice garden. And while David is being so well cared for, I have had the chance to talk to people who understand what we are going through. I’ve also had some reflexology, which was so calming. Their expert support has given me strength and comfort.
It may sound strange, but David is happy.
He believes he would not still be here without St Wilfrid’s, and I agree. Thanks to this wonderful Hospice, we are making the most of every day together. I cannot imagine what our lives would be like without their care.
