St Wilfrid’s joins 142 hospices as part of national campaign

At St Wilfrid’s, we are very excited to be a part of the Hospice UK national campaign called ‘This Hospice Care’, alongside 142 other hospices across the UK.

The campaign celebrates the vital expert care that hospices provide to their local communities, and highlights the importance of the generosity of people like you, who kindly leave a gift in their Will to their local hospice.

Why have we joined forces with other hospices?

As you may have read on our website, or heard in the news over the last six months, hospices across the UK are facing the worst funding crisis in over 20 years.*

Hospice UK have invited hospices across the UK to be a part of this campaign in an effort to showcase the vital expert end-of-life care that their local communities receive, completely free-of-charge to the patient and their loved ones.

Lois Howell, St Wilfrid’s Chief Executive says: “We are thrilled to be joining forces with over 143 other hospices across the UK. Hospice care across the country is facing its most pressured financial situation in over 20 years, and it is clear that many people are still unaware of the incredible impact of their local hospice.

By 2040, the number of annual deaths in the UK is expected to rise by 130,000, with 90% due to natural causes – these are the people who could benefit from the care hospices provide. If we don’t start planning now, the gap in hospice care could become very real”.

Why should you leave a gift in your Will to St Wilfrid’s Hospice?

Gifts left in Wills are crucial to help raise the £9 million a year it costs to run our hospice services (that’s over £26,000 a day). Often, people don’t realise that we are a local independent charity, and all of our services are provided to the community completely free-of-charge to the patient and their loved ones.

St Wilfrid’s expert end-of-life services are absolutely vital to the local community. We care for over 325 people at anyone time, from our 14-bed Ward at the Hospice and our Hospice Community Team visiting local people in their own homes, and in care homes. Our independent charity covers a community of over 200,000 people, and we receive over 900 referrals a year.

By leaving a gift of any size in your Will, you are ensuring that St Wilfrid’s Hospice care is still available for generations to come. In fact, if just 38% of people in our community left a gift of £300 in their Will, we could fully fund the Hospice Ward for at least seven years.

Because of the generosity of people like you who leave a gift in their Will to St Wilfrid’s, you are ensuring that people in your local community are receiving the best possible end-of-life care, and that families are cared for during some of the most difficult moments in their life. Thank you.
