Major Mick rows Tintanic to £43,000!
Mick Stanley, formerly of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, has raised an impressive £43,000 for St Wilfrid’s Hospice.
Over 3 months he rowed 100 miles from Hunston to Chichester basin and back in a home-made boat, delighting passers-by and the national press alike.
This figure is enough to fund over 200 home visits to patients in the community, 25 days of the entire Hospice at Home service or provide a community nurse specialist for over 2 months.
The ‘Tintanic’ herself went under auction on the charities eBay store www.ebay.co.uk/str/St-Wilfrids-Hospice-Chichester selling for £480 to a North Mundham resident who had followed Mick’s travels down the canal since October.
Major Mick said, “I am very proud to accomplish this mission I set myself for St Wilfrid’s Hospice, they have done such wonderful work over the years in our community.
It’s been wonderful talking to passers-by on each canal trip, it’s been a joy to bring a smile to so many peoples day – and also hear how many lives have been touched by the Hospice in such a positive way.”
Alison Moorey, Chief Executive for St Wilfrid’s Hospice said, “We are so grateful to have local heroes like Major Mick prepared to get active for St Wilfrid’s.
St Wilfrid’s Hospice receive just 16% of its funding and relies on the ongoing support of the public to raise £7.8 million each year.
His commitment and creativity has brought some cheer to so many. We also thank all those who have so generously donated to the Tintanic challenge.”
