A Couple of Characters!

Both Dusty and Roger knew about St Wilfrid’s Hospice as they had friends that worked here.  When they retired, Dusty 4 years ago and Roger 5 years ago, they both knew they wanted something to do with their time which would involve interacting with people.

They both thought that driving would be a great way to meet new people and to help the Hospice at the same time.
When speaking to them both, it is clear that they enjoy the interaction and banter they have with the patients and making a small difference to their everyday.

They both pride themselves on going the extra mile to make something a little bit more special for our patients, for example driving home along the beach, or taking a detour around Chichester so they could see all the Christmas lights – something that wouldn’t have been possible for them to do otherwise.

When they started with us both Dusty and Roger admitted that they were slightly apprehensive about talking with the patients and worried that they might say something wrong, but after a very short time they realised that they could relax and be themselves and that really is what our patients want.

If any of our patients are not their usual selves, then they would both feed this back to the hospice staff when they arrive just so that everyone is in the picture. Dusty and Roger are real characters and a credit to our Hospice volunteers. They bring a lot of fun and laughter to our patients and always try and go the extra mile to make a difference.
