3 Lovely Ladies

In our Chalcroft Furniture Outlet in Bognor Regis, we have a great team of staff and volunteers. I spoke to a few of the volunteers to see what they enjoyed most about their role and why volunteering was important to them.

I spent some time with three lovely ladies who all volunteer, Christine Mitchell, Dena Bishop and Ann Wright, all of whom started working there when it first opened, back in February 2017.

How did you hear about St Wilfrid’s Hospice and what made you want to volunteer for us?

Christine – My mother came to the Hospice around 10 years ago when she died and I wanted to give something back.

Dena – I lost my father there just a year ago and I have wanted to repay the kindness shown to me at that time, and volunteering seemed the best way to do that.

Ann – I was having an extension built and my builders were also working on building the new furniture outlet in Chalcroft, so I came along to see if they needed any volunteers.

What do you like most about volunteering in the shop?

All three ladies agreed that there was a great sense of camaraderie amongst the staff and volunteers and that they always have a great laugh together.

Christine – I have met people here that I haven’t seen for 20 years or more!

Dena – I like to chat to the customers and sometimes they just come in for a bit of company which is lovely for them and us. I also like it when items are donated and you get a nice surprise when you find out their value - and go on to raise a lot of money!

Ann – I like helping people and doing something useful with a little spare time.

We all have a great deal of job satisfaction and feel really part of the team. Volunteering helps us feel more confident and makes us feel that we are giving something back to the community.

Without our volunteers we simply could not provide the service that we do at our retail outlets. Whether it is just an hour or two or a whole week, any amount of time is appreciated and put to good use.
