We know there are some misconceptions surrounding hospices and hospice care. At St Wilfrid’s, we aim to demystify them and to do so, we invited some of the amazing people who work at the Hospice to walk us through common myths.

Myth 1) A hospice is just a place to die

Fact or fiction? Fiction.

We talked to Mandy, one of our Senior Nurses in the inpatient unit about one of the most common myths we hear.

Mandy said “If someone thinks that the Hospice is a place to die, I would say to them that that’s a misconception”

Myth 2) Hospice Care is Free

Fact or fiction? Fact.

We spoke to Suzy, our Director of Clinical Services to learn more about the cost of hospice care and whether or not it’s free.

Suzy said “We do receive a small grant for the NHS but as a non-profit charity, we rely on the generosity of our amazing supporters.”

Myth 3) One hospice is better than another

Fact or fiction? Fiction.

We asked Dr. Claire Magee, our Medical Director about this one.

She stated “The services offered may vary from hospice to hospice (…) I, personally, have worked in palliative care for 15 years now, and in that time worked across six different hospices.”

Myth 4) A hospice is only for cancer

Fact or fiction? Fiction.

We talked to Dr Clarissa Young, our Specilaty Doctor, who answered our question on whether a hospice only cares for patients with cancer.

Dr Clarissa said, “We treat a lot of different conditions that are chronic and may mean that they’re coming to the end of their life because of this.”

Myth 5) Hospice care is only available at the Hospice

Fact or fiction? Fiction.

We asked our Clinical Nurse Specialist, Melanie Howard-Wall, if hospice services being available at home is a myth or not.

Melanie answered “They [Hospice at Home team] will visit patients in their own homes, to support them with symptom control, such as pain relief or relieving nausea or vomiting.”
