ECEPC is a highly respected qualification for medical and nursing staff, paramedics and allied health professionals including nursing and physician associates from acute, community and hospice settings who would like a qualification in palliative care. It is of particular benefit to those working in all areas of general palliative care (including social care) and those new to specialist palliative care. All participants should have direct contact with patients requiring a palliative approach and care needs.

The course is run entirely as a distance learning course (between September and November 2023) and the assessment has been adapted to be undertaken remotely. It is coordinated by Princess Alice Hospice and run by various hospices around the country, including St Wilfrid’s Hospice Chichester.

ECEPC is an nine week distance learning, multi professional programme, divided into sections:

  1. What is palliative care and who is it for?
  2. Symptom issues in palliative care.
  3. Patients with emergency conditions.
  4. Patients in the last 48 hours of life.
  5. Breaking bad news to patients and families.
  6. Bereavement and support.
  7. Common ethical issues.

This is a home-based course. All candidates are provided with an extensive course workbook and access to a comprehensive virtual learning site. All candidates are assigned a facilitator at St. Wilfrid’s hospice to support them through the course and portfolio (which is assessed). The culmination of the course is the remote assessment day with a written and oral exam which is mandatory for all candidates across the sites.
