St Wilfrid’s Hospice 2023-24 Annual Review
2023 to 2024 was another busy, yet successful year for the Hospice, with employees and volunteers throughout the Charity supporting our growth and expansion within the community. It is our privilege to provide palliative and end-of-life care to those in our community, and we thank all those who have supported us in this mission.
How did we do in 2023 to 2024?

Making a difference
Without the support of our incredible volunteers, donors or shoppers, we wouldn’t be able to provide the care to your community hospice.
By March 2024, we had an impressive 542 volunteers generously giving their time to the Hospice. Providing us with skills, knowledge and valuable experience that helps us run our services daily. Thank you to every one of you!
Our fundraisers, shoppers and donors – your efforts have helped us to continue caring for people in your local area. Funds raised by you have helped us care for 265 patients on our Ward, manage 244 Hospice at Home Referrals and over 5,000 contacts made to patients and loved ones via our Family Services Team. Thanks to you, local people are receiving the care they deserve.

Making a difference – Highlights from the Hospice
With so many great achievements from around the Hospice, we wanted to shine a light on some of the great work our employees and volunteers have achieved in 2023 to 2024.
265 patients cared for on our Ward by our fantastic Inpatient Unit team.
244 Hospice at Home referrals – a vital service for those in our community.
343 average number of patients on our case load.
3,453 occupied bed days.
Over 5,000 contacts made to patients and loved ones by our Family Services Team.
7.9 days was the average amount of days people waited for care from referral to receiving care.
Over 700 walkers joining us for Moonlight Walk.
16 coffee mornings, 9 bake offs and 8 quiz nights held by our fantastic supporters.
5 years of Treecycle with over 15 tonnes of real trees collected by our elves.
£1,919,280 left to us through gifts in Wills. Thank you. These gifts help care for 1 in 4 of our patients.
£2,631,009 in sales thanks to generous shoppers!
We achieved £121,701 in Gift Aid. This is tax-free money from the government, which you can help us benefit from.
Over 331,000 transactions across retail and eCommerce. That’s a lot of shopping!
66.5 tonnes of textiles, books and bric-a-brac recycled.
350 retail volunteers working within the Retail Team.
83 training sessions were delivered.
16 individuals supported through the European Certificate of Palliative Care.
17 online meetings held with the focus of supporting palliative care for people with learning disabilities and/or in care homes.
Two ‘Bereavement in the Workplace’ sessions delivered, supporting those in the local community who suffer loss.
Key stats are from the Hospice location in Bosham only:
9,672kgs of general waste was sent off for Mechanical Biological Treatment.
8,839kgs of clinical waste incinerated for heat and power.
3,276kg of cardboard recycled.
1,872kg of food waste was sent off for anaerobic digestion.
We also sent our garden waste off to be turned into earth cycle compost!
During 2023 – 2024 the team saw all key performance indicators for our people improve.
Employee turnover continued to fall over the year, averaging out at around 10%.
Time lost to sickness absence has also decreased and was below 5% for the year!
2000 more applicants meaning people want to work for St Wilfrid’s. Something we’re incredibly proud about.

Every £1 spent in our shops, or item donated no matter how big or small, helps to provide care to those in our community who need it most.
Volunteer
Without our volunteers, St Wilfrid’s wouldn’t be able to operate in the way we do. If you could spare an hour, a weekend or more, you’ll become part of a fantastic community offering vital support to local lives.
Donate
Every donation counts at St Wilfrid’s. Whether it’s £5 to cover the costs of a nourishing meal or £27.57 to cover the costs of a Hospice at Home nurse’s salary for an hour, we are truly grateful.
