Warehouse Operative / Sorter

Salary: £8.21 per hour
Hours: 15 hours per week (on a rota basis, including weekends and bank holidays)
End date: Closing date: 3 January 2020, Interview date: 15 January 2020

Supporting the Retail Operations and Logistics Manager, the Warehouse Operatives will preferably have experience in a retail environment, however previous warehouse experience which demonstrates strong organisational and customer service skills are essential for this role. 

Based at our Donation Centre in Terminus Road, Chichester, the successful candidate will provide the best possible service to supporters, donors, customers and the warehouse team of staff and volunteers.

As a Warehouse Operative you will assist in the control of furniture and goods received, where donated goods are sorted and distributed to support the wider retail service.  Demonstrating strong team work and customer service skills, the successful candidate will show good communication skills towards colleagues and customers as part of the day to day activities of the Donation Centre.

The outlet trades 7 days a week and the role(s) involve a high level of manual handling. 


  • Support the Shop Manager in delivering excellent customer service in the Donations Centre
  • Work with the team in the organisation of the Donations Centre activities


  • Responsible for providing a high standard of customer service to donors and customers
  • Responsible for stock movement and handling


  • Delivers the St Wilfrid’s culture of excellence in people care, in particular recognising that some donors may have been recently bereaved
  • Assists in the day to day running of the Donation Centre assists in the control of furniture and goods received, sorting of saleable goods and distribution thereafter
  • Assists in disposal of waste to tip as required
  • Assists in loading and unloading of vans
  • Prepares goods for sale
  • Promotes Gift Aid as required
  • Helps maintain a clean and tidy work environment
  • Assists in the presentation and movement of furniture in the shop showroom as required
  • Acts as assistant to the driver as required, using safe and agreed practices at all times
  • Takes responsibility for safe practice and awareness of health and safety and infection control thus ensuring that the Hospice’s exposure to risk is minimised
  • Challenges self and others in the team to make continuous improvement
  • Works as an integral part of the shops team, being sensitive to the needs of the whole team and supportive of other team members
  • Communicates clearly and regularly with their Line manager and colleagues
  • Comply with requests from the Shop Manager, Deputy Manager and the Shop & Donation Centre Supervisors
  • Works at other locations as required
  • Participates in the rigorous application of performance management
  • Provides development training and support for self including mandatory updates on H&S, fire safety and back care
  • It is the responsibility of all staff to treat volunteers with respect and value their contribution
  • Works within agreed hospice policies, procedures and guidelines
