Registered Nurse - Night Duty

Salary: In the region of £25,800 to £27,900 per annum (pro-rata) depending on experience, plus enhancements – aligned to Band 5
Hours: 10 hours per week available, including weekends, bank holidays and unsocial hours. Currently Friday and Saturday nights alternate weeks.
End date: Permanent as from December 2019

A new opportunity has been developed for a Registered Nurse to join our highly regarded nursing team on the Inpatient Unit (IPU). This is an exciting time to join the Hospice team as we recently moved to our new purpose built facility in Bosham, providing excellent facilities to deliver our specialist care.

The successful candidate will lead the nursing team on a shift including students; deliver the highest level of individualised holistic care to patients and their families/carers.  Maintaining continuity of patient care which is planned and regularly assessed, you will be able to provide compassionate and attentive direct nursing in this acute setting.

Demonstrating a minimum of 6 months’ post registration and a relevant qualification, together with experience in a Palliative Care setting is desirable. Access to the education and training provided at our Education Centre is available to all staff.

PURPOSE

  • Delivers high standards of individualised holistic care to patients
  • Leads a team on a shift to provide compassionate specialist care to patients and their carers/families
  • May supervise and direct colleagues and students working on the inpatient unit
  • Practices in accordance with the NMC Code

SCOPE

  • Maintains a continuity of patient care on the Inpatient Unit (IPU) to the expected standards and procedures of the Hospice.
  • People: 2 or 3 healthcare assistants, volunteers plus students per shift
  • Communicate effectively with patient and families and at MDT
  • Engage constructively in case reviews and promote feedback from learning experiences

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Promotes the St Wilfrid’s culture of excellence in patient and people care
  • Delivers a high standard of care to patients and their carers/families, ensuring that care is planned following individual assessments, which is then implemented and evaluated regularly and accurately documented.
  • Occasionally acts as team leader, in the absence of a more senior nurse to ensure patient needs are met and a safe environment is maintained
  • Contributes towards ensuring that the Hospice’s exposure to risk is minimised through safe practice and awareness of health and safety and infection control
  • Ensures safe custody of medicines
  • Challenges the department/service to make continuous improvement to raise professional standards
  • Liaises with all members of the multidisciplinary team on the ward to ensure smooth working across teams
  • Communicates clearly and regularly with their Line manager and colleagues
  • Motivates and directs staff and volunteers to ensure high standards of performance and delivery
  • Reports on complaints, untoward incidents and faulty equipment to Senior Ward Staff / Lead Nurse Inpatient Services following Hospice policies and procedures in all instances.
  • Stretches and develops the capability of the team through support and guidance
  • Participates in the induction of staff acting as a mentor where necessary to provide
  • Contributes to reporting of progress towards meeting relevant strategic and operational goals
  • Demonstrates awareness of the need to implement cost effective measures when managing resources
  • Works closely with members of senior ward nurses group to maintain effective communication
  • Liaises with colleagues in other organisations as required
  • Carries out training and competency based assessments
  • Counsels and supports staff on personal and professional issues as appropriate
  • Ensures the maintenance of a supportive atmosphere maintaining good morale
  • Participates in Hospice Audit Programme, attends ward and clinical meetings as required
  • Supports research based practice and the maintenance of a supportive learning environment
  • Challenges the department/service to make continuous improvement
  • Provides development training and support for self and others including mandatory updates
  • It is the responsibility of all staff to treat volunteers with respect and value their contribution
  • Works within agreed hospice policies, procedures and guidelines

KNOWLEDGE & SPECIFIC JOB SKILLS
