Healthcare Assistant for Hospice at Home (Bank)

Salary: £9.43 per hour, plus Enhancements for Unsocial, Night and Sunday working
Hours: Bank (Casual hours)

Successful candidates will be able to offer the highest level of individualised holistic care to patients, their families and carers while maintaining continuity of patient care which is planned and regularly assessed. We are looking for Healthcare Assistants Bank who can demonstrate ability to make appropriate decisions when working alone in the community and report back to the senior nurse on duty.

Experience of working in palliative care is desirable but not essential as you will possess transferable skills to provide excellent compassionate care.   As part of our professional team, you will have the ability to demonstrate high standards of communication to respond to others in a supportive and people focussed working atmosphere.

Full driving licence and daily access to a car is essential.

  • To support Senior Nursing Staff and other qualified nurses
  • Delivers high standard of individualised nursing care to patients and families/carers


  • People –  1 x Health Care Assistant, occasionally plus nursing students per shift
  • Provide continuity of care on shift
  • Involves maintaining stock control as appropriate


  • Delivers the St Wilfrid’s culture of  excellence in patient and people care
  • Delivers a high standard of nursing care to patients and their families/carers under the supervision of a trained nurse and in accordance with their individualised care plans and assessments
  • Discusses care given to patients with the trained nurse and reports any changes in the patients condition
  • Demonstrates ability to make appropriate decisions when working alone in the community and report back to senior nurse on duty
  • Discusses plans of care with trained nurse and document and evaluate care given under supervision and counter signature of a trained nurse
  • Takes responsibility for safe practice and awareness of health and safety and infection control thus ensuring that the Hospice’s exposure to risk is minimised
  • Maintains security of patient’s property within their home and the security of the Hospice building
  • Reports on complaints, untoward incidents and faulty equipment to Hospice at Home Team Leader / Lead Nurse Community Services
  • Challenges self and others in the team to make continuous improvement
  • Communicates clearly and regularly with their Line Manager, internal and external colleagues including community services, patients and families/carers
  • Attends nurse meetings and other meetings as requested
  • Demonstrates respect for patients own environment
  • Participates in the application of performance management
  • Participates in the induction of staff
  • Demonstrates awareness of the need to implement cost effective measures when using resources
  • Provides development training and support for self  including mandatory updates
  • Night Support Worker will communicate overnight concerns regarding patients or their shift with Hospice Ward Staff and Team Leader.
  • It is the responsibility of all staff to treat volunteers with respect and value their contribution
  • Works within agreed hospice policies, procedures and guidelines
