Head of Marketing and Communications

Salary: circa £37,500 to £40,000 per annum, depending on experience
Hours: 37.5 hours per week, flexible work pattern options considered

We are a local charity that provides end of life care and support to patients and families. Following the successful relocation of our Hospice to a brand new purpose built facility in 2019, we are looking to strengthen our profile and reach in our community.

As a result, a fantastic opportunity to join our team in the new role of Head of Marketing and Communications has arisen. If you have extensive experience in leading marketing and communication activities and projects and a relevant professional qualification, we would be delighted to hear from you.

The successful candidate, reporting to the Chief Executive, will develop and lead the Marketing and Communications across the whole charity, supporting all departments, as well as increasing the profile of St Wilfrid’s externally. 

The post holder will lead a small team managing PR, website, social media, design, marketing and communications activities across the whole organisation. This will involve working closely with all departments and developing a marketing and communications strategy which will support the charity's strategic plan. We are looking for someone who is prepared to take a hands on approach and support the work of marketing and communications as the department develops.

We are looking for someone who has the skills and drive to maximise the opportunities to develop our brand and ensure that we increase engagement from the general public, creating an informed audience that will optimise service delivery aims such as earlier referral rates as well as increasing income through retail and fundraising.

  • Develop and deliver a marketing and communications strategy which will support the Hospice’s strategic plan
  • Provide effective leadership and management of PR, Website, Social Media, Design, Marketing and Communications activities across the whole organisation
  • Work closely with the Director of Fundraising and the Retail Director to support voluntary income growth
  • Act as brand guardian and implement tools to strengthen and develop the Hospice’s brand
  • Increase the positive brand visibility of St Wilfrid’s Hospice care, impact and charitable status
  • Manages, leads and directs the Marketing and Communications team


  • Responsible for all marketing and communications activities including budgets and the negotiation of third party contracts, and the delivery of all strategic objectives and targets
  • Responsible for Marketing and Communications direct reports: 2 people and volunteers as required
  • Be the lead consultant for Senior Management Team and Board of Trustees for communications/marketing related issues
  • Liaises with all staff and volunteers, and external media contacts and other partners
  • Responsible for monitoring effectiveness and impact of marketing and communications
  • Member of the Voluntary Income Generation Subcommittee and the Senior Staff Group


Marketing and Communications

  • Develop and implement internal and external communication strategies, in close liaison with the CEO, the Director of Fundraising and the Retail Director in particular
  • Develop and implement the digital strategy including website and social media, in close liaison with the Director of Fundraising
  • Develop and monitor KPIs and metrics to monitor and report upon the impact of marketing and communications activities
  • Develop and implement brand guidelines to ensure consistent and appropriate use of the Hospice’s brand internally and externally
  • Have editorial responsibility for hospice publications and literature, managing the delivery of engaging content, review and develop key messages across the organisation, ensuring these are in line with the strategy and values of the Hospice
  • Review and manage external contractors/agencies to ensure best use of resources
  • Work with the Director of Nursing and Medical Director to ensure that clinical services are effectively communicated, to encourage appropriate patient referrals and other clinical campaigns
  • Work with the HR/Payroll Manager and Voluntary Service Manager to develop employer brand and application to recruitment communications, and more widely with all line managers to develop effective communication practice to support engagement and retention of staff and volunteers
  • Work with the Head of Education to maximise opportunities to market external education and training opportunities to individuals and commissioners
  • Advise Senior Management Team and Trustees on communication in a crisis situation
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with staff at all levels, to ensure effective internal communication plans are in place and supported in all departments


  • Liaise with Head of Finance to ensure efficient and effective budget management

People Management

  • Lead, build and motivate the Marketing and Communications team, providing strong staff leadership and management and overseeing development and training, to enable individuals to reach their full potential
  • Stretches and develops the capability of the team through rigorous application of performance management
  • Motivates and directs both staff and volunteers to ensure high standards of performance and delivery
  • Provides development training and support for self and others including mandatory updates


  • Promotes the St Wilfrid’s culture of excellence in patient and people care
  • Contributes to reporting of progress towards meeting relevant strategic and operational goals
  • Contributes towards ensuring that the Hospice’s exposure to risk is minimised through safe practice and awareness of health and safety
  • Challenges the department/service to make continuous improvement
  • Communicates clearly and regularly with their Line manager and colleagues
  • It is the responsibility of all staff to treat volunteers with respect and value their contribution
  • Works within agreed hospice policies, procedures and guidelines
  • Reports to the Voluntary Income Generation Committee on marketing and communication strategy, activities and monitoring the impact of these against agreed metrics and KPIs

Knowledge and Specific Job Skills

  • Educated to degree level in relevant subject or equivalent experience
  • Professional qualification in PR/Marketing/Digital Marketing/Communications or equivalent experience
  • Extensive practical experience of developing the skills of a team of marketing /communication professionals
  • Experience of successful delivery against targets
  • Excellent communication, influencing and networking skills
  • Excellent IT skills including marketing/comms packages, Office and email
  • Substantial experience in developing and delivering marketing /communication activities and projects including digital
  • Experience of working with cross department teams and influencing managers at all levels
  • Car driver and regular access to own car
