Auxiliary Nurse - Nights

Salary: £9.62 ph, plus enhancements
Hours: Nights - Monthly rota - (Saturday x 3 and Wednesday x 1)

At an exciting time to join the Hospice, we are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Auxiliary Nurse

Successful candidates will be able to offer the highest level of individualised care to patients and their families and carers. Maintaining continuity of patient care which is planned and regularly assessed, we are looking for an Auxiliary Nurse who is able to provide compassionate and attentive direct nursing in this acute setting.

Relevant nursing auxiliary experience at NVQ Level 3 or equivalent experience is essential, and experience of working in palliative care is desirable but not essential as you will possess transferable skills to provide excellent compassionate care.   As part of our professional team you will have the ability to demonstrate high standards of communication to respond to others in a supportive and people focussed working atmosphere.

JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB PURPOSE

  • To support Senior Nursing Staff and other qualified nurses
  • Delivers high standard of individualised nursing care to patients and families/carers

JOB SCOPE

  • People – 2-4 nursing auxiliaries, 2 volunteers plus nursing students per shift
  • Record evidence of care on electronic data base SystmOne
  • Provide continuity of care on shift
  • Complete extended role programme
  • Involves ward cleaning duties, ordering stock and maintaining equipment audit

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Delivers the St Wilfrid’s culture of excellence in patient and people care
  • Delivers a high standard of nursing care to patients and their families/carers under the supervision of a trained nurse and in accordance with their individualised care plans and assessments
  • Discusses care given to patients with the trained nurse and reports any changes in the patients condition
  • Discusses plans of care with trained nurse and document and evaluate care given under supervision and counter signature of a trained nurse
  • Takes responsibility for safe practice and awareness of health and safety and infection control thus ensuring that the Hospice’s exposure to risk is minimised
  • Records accurate and timely evidence of care on electronic data base SystmOne
  • Works within the extended role programme, acts as a second checker for controlled drugs administered by a trained nurse, blood transfusion observations, changing simple dressings and setting up P.E.G feeds
  • Maintains security of patient’s property and the security of the Hospice building
  • Maintains equipment audits and completes daily, weekly, monthly cleaning schedules
  • Maintains general ward tidiness and housekeeping duties as required
  • Perform last offices and supervise the funeral directors collecting a deceased patient
  • Reports on complaints, untoward incidents and faulty equipment to Senior Ward Staff / Lead Nurse Inpatient Services
  • Challenges self and others in the team to make continuous improvement
  • Communicates clearly and regularly with their Line manager, internal and external colleagues, patients and families/carers
  • Attends nurse meetings and other meetings as requested
  • Participates in the application of performance management
  • Participates in the induction of staff
  • Demonstrates awareness of the need to implement cost effective measures when using resources
  • Provides development training and support for self including mandatory updates
  • It is the responsibility of all staff to treat volunteers with respect and value their contribution

KNOWLEDGE & SPECIFIC JOB SKILLS

  • Relevant nursing auxiliary experience
  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent experience
  • IT skills
  • 6 months caring experience
  • Clear communication skills
  • Knowledge of Palliative care
