Richard Minton, General Manager at Everyone Active in Chichester, was approached 10 years ago by the team at St Wilfrid’s Hospice when they were on the look-out for a start and finishing point for their new Moonlight Walk event. Richard jumped at the chance to be involved.
It was a privilege to be asked to help with such an amazing event and help raise money for a good cause.
There has been a variety of entertainment at the event over the years, from a steel band, to face painting, a choir and even a visit from some friendly owls! There is always an exciting, moving atmosphere and a real buzz around the place.
On the very first Moonlight Walk, Richard remembers that it was his job to open the gates at the start. The walkers were all eager to begin the walk, and as Richard opened the gate to let them all through, he got trapped behind the gate by swarms of people and couldn’t move for a long time! Now whenever Everyone Active employs somebody new they joke that this will be their first initiation test! Another memory Richard has, was when he was called to help give first aid to one of our dedicated first aiders – you really never know what is going to happen on the night!
The organisation and the team get better and better; year on year, and now the Moonlight Walk is like a well oiled machine. On the night the Hospice take the reins and provide staff and volunteers to help throughout the night but Richard has his own team of three or four staff to help with the set up and clear down. The local cadets, who are very efficient and reliable, are also on hand to provide help!
Once the event is finished, Richard and his team sweep and mop the floors and normally leave just before the morning staff arrive.
St Wilfrid’s would like to thank Richard and his team for their continued support over the last 10 years and look forward to many, many more Moonlight Walks in the future.
