Ward Clerk Bank

Salary: £8.77 per hour
Hours: Bank (Casual hours)

An opportunity has arisen for a Ward Clerk Bank, who is the first point of contact on our inpatient unit reception desk. The successful candidate must be able to provide exceptional customer care and have clear and concise communication skills. Duties include administrative and clerical support to our ward team, maintaining accurate information on the clinical database.

  • Administrative and clerical support to ward staff on shift
  • Receptionist to inpatient unit


  • Clear communication with nurses,  multi-disciplinary team and volunteers on the shift
  • Update patient data on computer
  • Provide excellent customer care


  • Delivers the St Wilfrid’s culture of  excellence in patient and people care
  • Acts as a receptionist to the Inpatient unit
  • Maintains accurate information on the clinical database, particularly with admissions, discharges and deaths
  • Receives admissions, assists with organisation of discharges/appointments and communicates with other departments
  • Liaises with internal and external organizations, colleagues and professionals as required
  • Arranges bank nurse cover as requested
  • Takes responsibility for safe practice and awareness of health and safety and infection control thus ensuring that the Hospice’s exposure to risk is minimised
  • Reports on complaints, untoward incidents and faulty equipment to Senior Ward Staff / Lead Nurse Inpatient Services
  • Challenges self and others in the team to make continuous improvement
  • Communicates clearly and regularly with their Line manager, colleagues,  patients and families/carers
  • Participates in the induction of staff
  • Attend ward meetings as required
  • Participates in the collection of data for ward audits as required
  • Participates in the application of performance management
  • Demonstrates  awareness of the need to implement cost effective measures when using resources
  • Provides development training and support for self  including mandatory updates
  • It is the responsibility of all staff to treat volunteers with respect and value their contribution
  • Works within agreed hospice policies, procedures and guidelines


  • RSA grade 3 and or equivalent clerical and administration experience
  • Effective communication skills
  • Good IT and organisational skills
  • Team work, adaptability and work under pressure
  • Knowledge of healthcare settings
  • Customer care/receptionist experience
  • Highly motivated and has coping mechanisms to deal with stress
