Retail Director

Salary: In the region of £45,000 per annum
Hours: 37.5 hours a week
End date: 5pm on 29 November 2018. Interviews will be held week commencing 10 December 2018

A fantastic opportunity for an experienced retail leader to join our team has arisen with the opportunity of the role of Retail Director. Reporting to the Chief Executive and as a member of the senior management team, the successful candidate will provide clear leadership to our hard working and committed Retail team.

As the Retail Director the successful candidate will develop and deliver the marketing and promotion strategy in liaison with the Director of Fundraising and Communications, ensuring sound action plans are integrated throughout retail to create long term sustainable income streams, maximising new opportunities.

We are looking for someone with extensive practical retail experience at a senior management level to stretch and develop the capabilities of the team to make continuous improvement. JOB PURPOSE

  • Develops and delivers a 3-year strategic plan for Retail that integrates with the broader organisational strategies of St Wilfrid’s Hospice
  • Manages, leads and directs the Retail team, and is a member of the Senior Management Team

JOB SCOPE

  • Responsible for all Retail activities including budgets, and the delivery of all strategic objectives and targets
  • Responsible for all Retail direct reports, team members, interns and volunteers, as well as all Retail premises.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic

  • Promotes the St Wilfrid’s culture of excellence in patient and people care
  • Works with the Voluntary Income Generation Sub-Committee to develop a 3-year strategy and prepares  a sound action plan in place to deliver the agreed aims and targets
  • Develops marketing and promotion strategy for Retail in liaison with Fundraising and Communications
  • Ensures a strategy is developed and implemented for donated stock with guidelines for pricing, quality checks, specialist selling and stock rotation
  • Attends and contributes to meetings of the Board of Trustees and sub-committees
  • Deputises for the Chief Executive, as required, and works with the Senior Management Team to provide effective leadership across the organisation, including participating in the SMT on call rota

Operational

  • Develops an annual Business Plan for each shop and for E-Commerce
  • Ensures appropriate presentation and reporting of progress in meeting agreed strategic and operational goals
  • Leads the development of Retail initiatives that identify and maximise new opportunities and ensures these create sustainable income streams over the long term
  • Evaluates effectiveness of Retail activities and conducts relevant market research
  • Liaises with Head of Finance to ensure efficient and effective budget management and communication of charitable retailing activities
  • Ensures all Retail activities are fully compliant with legal requirements and the relevant statutory bodies
  • Ensures the Hospice’s exposure to risk is minimised and appropriate controls and processes are in place to manage the adverse impact of risk
  • Ensures the Hospice complies with all statutory and best practice requirements of Health and Safety for all retail activities
  • Challenges the organisation to make continuous improvement
  • Works within agreed Hospice policies, procedures and guidelines

People

  • Leads, builds and motivates the Retail teams, providing strong staff leadership and management and overseeing development and training, to enable individuals to reach their full potential
  • Reviews the retail staffing structure to ensure the appropriate resources are in place to achieve the agreed goals
  • Maximises the appropriate use of volunteers in all aspects of retail activities
  • Stretches and develops the capability of the team through rigorous application of performance management
  • Motivates and directs both staff and volunteers to ensure high standards of performance and delivery, including customer service
  • Provides development training and support for self and others

KNOWLEDGE & SPECIFIC JOB SKILLS

  • Charity and/or commercial Retail experience at a senior management level
  • Experience of contributing to strategic development across an organisation
  • Experienced change management skills
  • Extensive practical experience at a senior level of leading and developing a team
  • Successful delivery against targets
  • Proven financial and commercial acumen
  • Excellent communication and networking skills
  • Qualification in relevant subject to degree level or equivalent experience
  • Car driver and daily access to own car
