Successful candidates will be able to offer the highest level of individualised holistic care to patients and their families and carers.  Maintaining continuity of patient care which is planned and regularly assessed, we are looking for Registered Nurses who are able to provide compassionate and attentive direct nursing in this acute setting.

Experience of working in palliative care is desirable but not essential as you will possess transferable skills to provide excellent compassionate care.   As part of our professional team you will have the ability to demonstrate high standards of communication to respond to others in a supportive and people focussed working atmosphere.

This is an exciting time to join the Hospice with future opportunities as we move towards opening our new 18 bedded Hospice in Bosham in 2018. 


  • Regularly acts as team leader on a shift
  • Delivers high standard of individualised care to patients
  • Supervises and directs staff and students working on the Inpatient Ward


  • People – ‘2 or 3 healthcare assistants and 1 volunteer per shift plus students
  • Maintains continuity of patient care on shift 


  • Promotes the St Wilfrid’s culture of excellence in patient and people care 
  • Delivers a high standard of care to patients and their carers/families, ensuring that care is planned following individual assessments and implemented and evaluated regularly 
  • Acts as team leader, in the absence of a more senior nurse to ensure patient needs are met and a safe environment is maintained  
  • Liaises with all members of the multidisciplinary team on the ward to ensure smooth working across teams  
  • Motivates and directs both staff and volunteers to ensure high standards of performance and delivery 
  • Reports on complaints, untoward incidents and faulty equipment to Senior Ward Staff /  Lead Nurse Inpatient Services 
  • Contributes towards ensuring that the Hospice’s exposure to risk is minimised through safe practice and awareness of health and safety and infection control 
  • Ensures safe custody of medicines
  • Challenges the department/service to make continuous improvement 
  • Stretches and develops the capability of the team through support and guidance 
  • Participates in the induction of staff
  • Contributes to reporting of progress towards meeting relevant strategic and operational goals 
  • Demonstrates awareness of the need to implement cost effective measures when managing resources
  • Works closely with members of senior ward nurses group to maintain effective communication  
  • Liaises with colleagues in other organisations as required  
  • Communicates clearly and regularly with their line manager and colleagues 
  • Carries out training and competency based assessments  
  • Practices in accordance with the NMC Code  
  • Counsels and supports staff on personal and professional issues as appropriate 
  • Ensures the maintenance of a supportive atmosphere maintaining good morale 
  • Participates in Hospice Audit Programme, attends ward and clinical meetings as required 
  • Supports research based practice and the maintenance of a supportive learning environment
  • Provides development training and support for self and others including mandatory updates 
  • Treats volunteers with respect and values their contribution
  • Works within agreed hospice policies, procedures and guidelines 


  • Registered Nurse Level 1
  • 6 months post registration experience
  • Knowledge of Palliative Care
